The Leeds City Region covers 10 council areas including Leeds, York, Selby, Wakefield and Harrogate. There is a recession, but there is expected to be growth and also high replacement demand for jobs. This is because over the next few years many people are due to retire. Most jobs will need qualifications at level 2 and above.

Top employment sectors

The sectors that are the biggest employers are retail, wholesale and motor vehicle, health and social care, manufacturing (this is higher than any other region in the country), education and business services, eg call centres.

Key sectors for growth

These are the job sectors that are important because they are likely to grow. They are advanced manufacturing, digital and creative (still a small sector and very competitive), finance and business (Leeds is the second largest finance centre in the UK after London), hospitality and tourism, and low carbon.

Have a look at video clips of young people working in all areas of Leeds Region.

Business size

It can be tempting to think that all jobs are with big companies, but most people in the region are employed in smaller companies of 0–49 employees or medium businesses between 50–249 employees.
