Neglect is when you aren’t being looked after properly by the people who are supposed to care for you. There are lots of reasons why your parent or carer might be neglecting you. They may not have enough money, or may have problems with their mental health or drugs or alcohol. Some of the signs of neglect are:

  • You are left alone for a long time
  • You don’t have enough food to eat
  • You don’t have clothes to keep you warm
  • You don’t have somewhere to stay
  • You are given too much responsibility for looking after other people
  • You are not taken to the doctor when you are unwell
  • You are left with people who you do not feel safe with
  • You get no support from an adult

If you think you are being neglected you should talk to someone you trust such as a teacher so you and your parents/carers can get the help your family need. No matter what problems your parents are having, there will be someone who can help.

Talk to somebody you trust: If you need help for yourself or are worried about a friend or family member, you should speak to an adult or someone that you feel comfortable with and can trust.

That could be family members, teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers or other adults who work with children. They will listen to what you have to say.

Don't be afraid to talk to these people if you are worried. They are there to help you.
