North Yorkshire Sexual Assault Referral Centre and Child Sexual Assault Assessment Services

The York & North Yorkshire Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) and Child Sexual Assault Assessment Services (CSAAS) provide the following services:


All referrals to Mountain Healthcare must be made by police or social care as soon as possible. In addition, all professionals are encouraged to ring Mountain Healthcare for advice. Advice is avaliable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via telephone: 0330 223 0099.

In the event of acute injuries, the child or young person will be taken to the Emergency Department and Mountain Healthcare will be contacted. Off-site appointments are possible.

At the strategy meeting, Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships procedures should be followed and if sexual violence or child sexual abuse suspected, you should organise a strategy meeting involving Mountain Healthcare.

Under 19s with learning difficulties, complex need or familial abuse should be seen within the paediatric service.

Patients aged 0 - 12 years requiring an Acute (Forensic) examination are offered an appointment at the Hazelhurst Centre in Leeds. This is open:

  • Monday to Saturday, 10:00am to 6:00pm
  • Sundays and bank holidays, 11:00am to 4:00pm

At the SARC appointment, the patient is brought to SARC with an adult who holds parental responsibility. The social worker or police officer must also attend SARC appointment.

All patients will be seen by a Paediatric Doctor Forensic Medical Examiner (FME) and a Paediatric Crisis Worker.

A holistic assessment of the patient will be undertaken. This includes:

  • the patient being examined for injuries
  • forensic samples taken if required
  • a baseline Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening is provided if required
  • referrals are made into external statutory organisations, healthcare, and support services

Every patient and family will receive a holistic follow-up 2 weeks post SARC appointment. A follow-up STI screening will be completed if needed by our Specialist Sexual Health Nurse Advisor (if the patient is aged 0 to 12 years). The patient will be referred into YorSexual Health for baseline and a follow-up STI screening (if the patient is aged 13 to 18 years). Each case is reviewed by our paediatric team.

Medical Reports and Statements are written with appropriate peer review.

Young victims aged 13 to 15 years old should be offered an appointment within the adult (16 years +) SARC service if clinically appropriate.

Actue (Forensic) examinations are available between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday at Acer House in York.

For urgent examinations required outside these times, patients will be offered an appointment at either Hackenthorpe Lodge in Sheffield or the Hazelhurst Centre in Leeds.

However all under 19s with learning disabilities, complex need or familial abuse should be seen within the paediatric service.

All patients will be seen by a Nurse Forensic Medical Examiner (FME) and a Crisis Worker.

  • a baseline Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening is provided if required
  • referrals are made into external statutory organistations, healthcare, and support services

Every patient and family will receive a holistic follow-up 6 weeks post SARC appointment. The patient will be referred into YorSexual Health for baseline and a follow-up STI screening. Each case is reviewed by our paediatric team.

Children and young people aged 0 to 15 years, Non-Acute Pathway (14 days or more)

All referrals to Mountain Healthcare must be made by police or social care as soon as possible following a disclosure or concern of sexual abuse or assault of a child or young person with last incident happening 14 days ago or more. All professionals are encouraged to ring Mountain Healthcare for advice. Advice is avaliable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via telephone: 0330 2230099.

Follow Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships Procedures in the strategy meeting, if sexual violence or child sexual abuse is suspected, organise a strategy meeting involving Mountain Healthcare.

There is a weekly non-acute clinic avaliable by appointment only between 10am to 6pm, every Tuesday at Acer House in York.
